The Chatham Area Transit (CAT) Board on Tuesday during its monthly board meeting voted unanimously to raise the fare for its premium services effective October 20, 2014. The fare increase will affect the 100X Airport Express and 114X Abercorn Express only; it will not impact the fares for other CAT services.
The vote came after public meetings were held between June-September to present the proposed fare increase and schedule adjustments. The Airport Express fare will change to $5 one-way or $8 round-trip. The increase to this premium, non-stop service allows CAT to add Sunday service while still providing savings over alternative transportation options. “Concern for employees of the Savannah International Airport and those commuting to or near the airport for work on a daily basis have been taken into consideration,” said Chief Development Officer, Ramond Robinson. They are encouraged to purchase a weekly pass for $16 or a monthly pass for $60, which will both be valid on the express and keep their fare unchanged.
CAT is very pleased with the successful performance of the Airport Express during its first year, which has resulted in over 13,000 trips. The increase in rate to an express fare allows additional hours to be added to the service for locals, tourists, and business commuters while still providing savings over other transportation options.
The one-way fare for Route 114X Abercorn Express will increase from $1.50 to $2. This premium service is targeted to commuters traveling between Southside and downtown. Most importantly, this non-stop express service offers commuters the benefits of less traffic and congestion while traveling to and from work.
