Dump the pump. Save Money. Try Transit.
Chatham Area Transit (CAT) announces that it will again partner with the City of Savannah and the Savannah Bicycle Campaign to participate in the “Dump the Pump Challenge” on Thursday, June 19, 2014. The event pits a bicyclist, a bus passenger, and the driver of a car against each other in a race to leave midtown Savannah and be the first to reach City Hall in downtown Savannah. This challenge helps mark the observation of the ninth annual National Dump the Pump Day that is recognized by transit properties across the nation.
The contestants will leave the Twelve Oaks Shopping Center on Abercorn Street at approximately 8:00 AM when the 14 Abercorn bus arrives at the stop located there. The contestants will follow all traffic laws and speed limits, and the bus will run a regular route, picking up and dropping off passengers as usual. The bus contestant must get off at a CAT bus stop, the bicyclist must rack her bike at a bike rack, and the driver must park his car in a parking garage. The winner will be the first contestant that walks across the finish line, which will be located on the west side of City Hall, next to the Hyatt. Jennifer Colestock, of the Savannah Bicycle Campaign, is prepared to defend her title as last year’s winner.
National Dump the Pump Day encourages people to leave their cars at home and consider alternative commuting options in an effort to improve air quality and conserve fuel. CAT has been accepting pledges to dump the pump as contest entries and is offering free rides on all bus routes to anyone who shows our coupon on June 19, 2014, Dump the Pump Day.
