Chatham Area Transit is excited about its role in introducing its education partner, East Broad Street K-8 School, to the student athletes of Savannah State University in an innovative reading program. “Read with the SSU Tigers” pairs approximately 40 student athletes with third grade students to promote better reading performance. The athletes mentor and tutor the elementary students twice each month in the classrooms under the supervision and direction of the East Broad’s teaching staff. The teaching staff will monitor the children’s reading progression and utilize incentives and awards of achievement as part of this initiative.
This program allows the college students an opportunity to serve in the community and to make a positive difference in children’s lives. The children are excited about working with the older students who are taking an interest in them and encouraging them to read for success.
